Dr. Robert Gravani is a Professor of Food Science in the Department of Food Science. He received a BS degree in Food Science from Rutgers University and his MS and PhD degrees in Food Science from Cornell University with minors in microbiology and food marketing/management. He was appointed to the food science faculty in 1978 and currently serves as the Department Extension Leader and Director of the National Good Agricultural Practices Program.

Dr. Gravani's primary responsibilities are in the area of food science/food safety extension and outreach where he maintains a very active program and conducts short courses, seminars, and workshops for food processors, food retailers, the foodservice industry, and government regulatory agencies. He is interested in the microbiological safety and quality of foods and consumer knowledge of these important issues.

Gravani: Well today with the increasing number of food allergies, that are becoming prevalent in the United States, there are a number of agencies and organizations that provide some very credible, outstanding, educational information to consumers and anyone interested in learning more about food allergies and big eight food allergens and allergy management and they include organizations like the International Food Information Council, The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network, the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology, the Food and Drug Administration and many, many other really good sources of information. So, anyone who is food allergic, it's really up to you, to get this information, it's out there, it's credible, it's easy to obtain and it's extremely important that we spend some time learning more about this important problem in ways that we can actively manage and control it because for many people this is a life threatening situation, so the more we learn about these food allergens, the better we are able to control them.
