Host: How do genetics influence teen drinking? Judith Welles Cousins: Genetics are a very important influence on in teen drinking as well as teen drug use and what that means is that, if there is a family history of drug abuse or alcohol abuse, then what we say in a few of -- is that teenager is genetically loaded and he is genetically at a higher risk, has a more of a genetic vulnerability to developing alcohol and drug abuse. It doesn't guarantee and it's not, like a felt a complain like this will happen, but it makes that teenager more vulnerable and that's the genetic piece. 1
