Host: What can I do if I ask for a raise and don't get one?

Karen James Chopra: If you don't get a raise, you should make sure that you have a very open conversation with your boss about what his or her expectations are about what you need to do to get a raise. So if they say, "No, we don't think that, that is an appropriate thing to do for you right now," and you think you would like to stay with the company, then you should say, "What would I need to do? What would I need to accomplish? What things would you need to see from me in order for me to get a raise to that level of salary?

" They should be able to give you some very concrete things or we would expect you to bring in this level of sales or we would expect you to be able to perform at this level with clients or on contract. So you have some really concrete targets to shoot at and then you should ask your boss to help you to make sure that you are on track for that. So schedule meetings at least once a quarter to evaluate progress and to make sure that for the next year, you are on progress to get that raise. Then if you don't get the raise next year having stayed in close touch with your bosses about what they are expecting from you, then it really is time to look for another position that's going to compensate you more.
