Michael Peterson: Hello! My name is Michael Peterson. I have been an independent locksmith in Oak Park Illinois for the last 10 years. Today I am demonstrating basic lock picking techniques. For this demonstration, I will be using a tension tool, a manual pick gun. I will also be picking a single sided deadbolt. A tension tool does almost the same thing, as a tension wrench does. What it does is, is it allows you to use a more precise amount of pressure using your finger tips, instead of your whole hand on the wrench. The pick gun is a automatic version of the basic pick. It allows you to strike all the pins at one time, instead of manipulating them individually. Here is how you use it.

Insert the tension tool into the cylinder and apply clockwise or counter clockwise pressure. Insert the blade of the pick gun, try not to bind it. Apply pressure on the tension range and pull the hand on the pick gun. The clicking noise is me pulling the handle over and over again, wracking the pin. You pull the trigger of the pick gun to manipulate the pins inside the cylinder.

While you are doing this, you are increasing and decreasing the tension on the cylinder with the tension wrench. Once the cylinder is picked, use a flathead screwdriver drill the bolt. Before inserting a key into a lock, you must return the cylinder to its resting position. In our next demonstration, I will be showing you how to pick a commercial grade lever.
