I grew up on a farm in rural Kalona. While my dad farmed only part time, it was enough to give me a real love and desire for farming full time. Since those growing up years I’ve been acquiring the necessary skills, knowledge, and equipment to make a farm run. The icing on the cake being an apprenticeship with Polyface Inc., a world-renowned farm for ecologically sound, community based, and family friendly farming practices.

I seek to minister to the food needs of the Iowa City and surrounding areas using these same farming practices. I’ve embarked on my own entrepreneurial farming saga. Producing clean, healthy, and nutritious food that is so good it just jumps off the plate and slaps you in the face. I implement practices that restore land, environment, and community.

My goal is to create a farm that provides for people’s needs in a way that is best for the land, animals, water quality, environment, producer, consumer, and community as a whole. My farm is the positive food alternative in a time when food quality is on the decline. You’re always welcome here, and when you come I hope you can see firsthand my farm mission:

To provide farm products that nurture my customers and enhance our community using farming practices that care for creation.

How to Address the Needs of the Chicken

Galen Bontrager: Hello! I am Galen Bontrager, owner and operator of Galen Bontrager Farm based out of Wellman, Iowa and we are going to learn today how to build a chicken-coop. This is our final step where we have assembled the frame for our front cover and we are just ready to fasten our chicken wire on to it and then we will be set. So again this was a six foot wide piece of chicken wire, this is one inch wide chicken wire netting and I cut at about 52 inches and we just fasten it on here.

I will just go ahead and start at one end, seems it is a six foot width. We are going to have a little extra sticking out on this end, so just to keep it simple and easy I just fold that under; it saves a lot of time to just try cut off every individual wire to shave off that extra five or six inches that's there. So that's what I will do and I will just staple again every four, five inches and again you don't really have to staple on the cross brace similar to like we did with our cross bracing on the bottom part of the frame and so our chicken pen is now assembled a little bit now about some of the chickens needs and this 2:17 this is real simple, you can hinge this up and down too just like we can hinge our back end to collect the eggs. This end is easily swung up and down so you can reach in and you will maybe put seed in or water for the chickens if they need it, very simple to reach. For moving and transport with my pasture operation movement of the bird is essential; if they stay on this place too long they will probably mess it up and it just going to be a big muddy hole which is going to destroy the grass cover. So we like to move it every couple of days which this is light enough. With a person or two you can just pick up this end make them pick up that end then you guys move it over if you feed everyday, every couple of days. Just also in the back we have room; one nest box is enough for five hens I wouldn't put up to 15 and here since we have three birds in here, four to five would be sufficient here but this will give us adequate exercise for the hens and this will produce for a nice little farm flock of your own and this is how -- we have seen all the steps today for assembling the chicken pen and this completes our video and I hope wish you the best with making your own.
