Michelle Otis: Hi, my name is Michelle Otis. I am the Shelter Director at the Washington Humane Society in Washington DC and today we are talking about how to adopt a dog.

Host: What type of commitment will I need to make when adopting a dog?

Michelle Otis: When you adopt a dog you need to be prepared to make a commitment for life. A dog can live anywhere from 10-16, 17 years depending on the breed that you adopt. So depending on how old the dog you are adopting is, you need to be prepared for at least that long. The idea is that your home will be the final and last home in the dog's life. So we are looking for permanent placement when we are placing animals and a lifetime is what we look for.
