Host: How much will it cost to adopt and own a dog?

Michelle Otis: Different organizations charge different adoption fees, so it is hard to put an exact number on adoption fee. I would say on average most organizations are going to charge anywhere $100-250 for an adoption fee. So in addition to that, you also need to take into consideration the cost of food, the cost of regular routine veterinary care, toys, supplies, bedding, leashes, collar, things of that nature.

I would say you should look and expect to spend anywhere from minimum $700 a year on up to a 1000. If you have a veterinary emergency or something of that nature, your cost could really increase, so be prepared. It is always nice to have a little slush fund on the side in case an emergency happens with your pet.
