Tim McWelsh: Hi, I am Tim McWelsh, founder of Earth Connection School of Wilderness Survival and Ancient Skills near Fredericksburg Virginia. Earth Connection has been teaching wilderness survival, outdoor skills, and self sufficiency for quite a few years. And recently we started teaching organic gardening as part of an increased self sufficiency curriculum. In this video clip collection we will teach you the foundational skills for organic gardening like where to place a garden, when to plant, which crops to plant, pest control, soil amendments and many other skills to make you feel like a real gardener. The skills and techniques presented here will involve organic gardening and container and also in the ground. Necessary materials include seeds or seedlings, shovels, rakes, weed barrier fabric, or newspaper. Organic fertilizer and pest control, watering equipment, and a few other important supplies that we'll discuss in each clip.
Gardening does involve risks. Even organic approved pesticides are harmful to humans in their concentrated form. Shovels and pitchforks could injure your feet or body. Backs or muscles can be hurt digging or carrying heavy items, and be careful in the garden. I have been gardening since I was a little kid. While I was a teenager I gardened reluctantly but then after that I grew to love it again. I have been teaching outdoor skills, wilderness survival and self sufficiency for a dozen years now, at my school Earth Connection. We also teach Organic Gardening now as part of our year round curriculum. Now in our first clip we are going to talk about our organic garden plan. What to plant and when to plant it.
