Dick Stohr is That Yo-Yo Guy! He has been a full time yo-yo professional since 1997. He does the Spintastics all day teaching program Yo-Yo Fun & Science of Spin in elementary schools as well as libraries in the summer time in the Mid-Atlantic states. He also performs at parties, festivals, scout meetings, Trade Shows and other fun events. He has set six yo-yo World Records and has been a yo-yo contest judge at World, National, Regional, State and local contests since 1999. He started playing with yo-yos in elementary school in the 1950's. During High School and College it was not cool so he did not play much. Following a career in the US Navy and Navy Reserve plus positions of increasing responsibility in the civilian business world he quit his day job to become That Yo-Yo Guy. Any day that he gets to play with his yo-yos and other peoples kids must be a good day. Teaching the beginners has become his passion. He believes that kids are from 6 to 106 years old and all kids can have fun with a yo-yo if they get a good start and do not have to unlearn bad habits.

Hi, I am Dick Stohr. I am That yo-yo guy. We have been talking about basic yo-yo tricks. We're trying to do is have the beginner understand how to get started in the best way possible. There are plenty of videos on the Internet that tell you how to do the fancy stuff in the competitions, but what I want to concentrate on is the yo-yo basics. So, what I am going to do in this clip is try and show you two yo-yo tricks; one is a maintenance trick; one is a very famous trick. The first one, each time you throw the yo-yo down and turn your hand over to catch the yo-yo, you are in fact twisting the string, either half a turn tighter or looser, depending on which hand you are using and what yo-yo trick you are doing. There are many ways to get the string back to neutral. I showed you in a previous clip that you can just let the string hang down; but if you want to do a trick to adjust the twist in your yo-yo string, it's called Flying Saucer or Sleeping Beauty. If you throw it to the right, it tightens the twist of the string; if you throw it to the left, it loosens the twist of the string and it goes like this. That tightened the twist of the string quite a bit. Now, if I need to loosen it, I throw it to the left, and it is the trick, flying saucer. When you are doing this, you want it to sleep on it's side and then it snaps back to your hand - righty tighty, lefty loosy. It's a string adjustment trick, but it's kind of interesting. The other yo-yo trick that I want to show you in this clip is called Around the World - very, very famous trick. Remember when we did the forward pass in the basic clips -- what you are going to do this time though is, make it sleep at the end of the string and go all the way around. So what you are going to do is the same motion as the forward pass, but you are going to start it down a little bit. When it gets to the end of the yo-yo string, it will go to sleep and sleep all the way around the circle. Let me show you the difference between an outside loop and Around the World. The difference being, that Around the World is a sleep trick; it sleeps all the way around. The Outside Loop is a non-sleeping trick; it goes out and comes right back. So, when you are doing around the world, make sure that the yo-yo sleeps all the way around the circle. And you can do it with the forward pass motion or you can do with the Breakaway motion, which is what we are going to cover in the next clip.
