Host: What should a parent do a situation develops at night?

Robin Vick: It's not uncommon for an illness to really to show itself in the nighttime. Fever is known to emerge more fully at night. Just one of those things about how the body works. I want to make sure that families know that health care is a 24-hour a day process and the health care team, the physicians, the doctors and the nurses who take care of your family, recognize that, and they made available resources for families, no matter what time of day it is and a family should never feel that they can't pick up the phone and ask questions. It's always best to air on the side of more information, better communication and so please do that.

In the plan of care that you are developing on an ongoing basis, the family is going to be given numbers to call. There will be resources in place and that will be communicated to the family as to who the health care team providers are, who that family may likely speak to in the middle of the night and what to expect in that communication. Often times nurses manage these first calls in deciding about how to proceed in an illness and the family should know that that maybe the first line of communication and that the nurse will communicate with the physician or the emergency room, if the situation is one that deserves immediate attention.
