The Emergency Medicine team is the first contact with the University Health System. Approximately 61,000 patients come through our doors each year and over 15,000 are admitted for additional care to the hospital.
The 41 bed Emergency Department (ED) is located in the University of Virginia Hospital, a level-l trauma center.

Host: What could result if treatment is delayed?
Robert O'Connor: Well, once the heart stops which is what happens with cardiac arrest. Essentially when cardiac arrest occurs it results in clinical death. If there is not some intervention, so it's a high stakes event when that happens. Within 4-6 minutes without treatment a person will not survive though under -- though suffer from brain death at that point. So when someone has cardiac arrest, it's important that a bystander start performing CPR.
