Host: Does surviving a cardiac arrest put you at risk for another occurrence?

Robert O'Connor: In general with most patients who survive cardiac arrest unless there is a reversible cause, they will receive a permanent defibrillator. At least, they should be evaluated for one. The one exception would be if someone suffers cardiac arrest, they come to the hospital and or found to have blockage of one of the coronary arteries, the cardiologist then opens the artery and blood flow appears to be normalize again, then they probably will not need a defibrillator because the cause has been identified and treated.
