Dr. Nina Solenski: Hi, I am Nina Solenski. I am one of the Stroke Neurologists here at the University of Virginia Health System. We will be talking now about the different kinds of strokes. There are two main categories that we speak about in terms of strokes. There are those that are known as Ischemic and those that are known as Hemorrhagic. Ischemic strokes represent those strokes where there is some kind of blockage to the brain and the blood flow is compromised. Hemorrhagic strokes occur because there is a rupture in a blood vessel itself that causes the blood to flow out into the brain spaces and both of these strokes are life threatening. So it's not that one is any worser than the other, they are very important to recognize, but they are different causes for stroke.
