Host: How long does it take to fully recover from a stroke?

Dr. Nina Solenski: We actually like to say that it is a lifetime of recovery which is very true, but in the first year or so, that's usually when the biggest gains occur. It doesn't mean that, that things wouldn't continue to get better. It is just that the rate of recovery may slow down after that. Some of the things that affect that are age. Certainly, if we experience a stroke when we are in our 20s or 30s and young people do experience strokes, versus when we are in our 80s, some of the medical complications that patients have in their 80s can make that recovery much slower. So that's an important thing to remember.
