The Ophthalmology Residency Training Program at the University of Virginia was separated from Otolaryngology in 1947. Since 1978, it has been under the leadership of a full-time academic faculty. The Department currently serves as the ophthalmic referral center for central and western Virginia and parts of West Virginia, North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.

Host: Besides seniors, who else is more likely to develop cataracts?

Dr. Laura D. Cook: Diabetics often will develop cataracts earlier on, patients that have a family history of cataract at an early age, patients that have been on steroids, anybody who has had eye trauma, anybody who has had inflammation inside of the eye and then there are certain syndromes, there is a whole host of chromosome syndromes and abnormalities that also can cause cataracts especially in young children.
