The Ophthalmology Residency Training Program at the University of Virginia was separated from Otolaryngology in 1947. Since 1978, it has been under the leadership of a full-time academic faculty. The Department currently serves as the ophthalmic referral center for central and western Virginia and parts of West Virginia, North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.

Host: Who is most at risk for eye damage due to sun exposure?
Dr. Laura D. Cook: Everyone is at risk for sun exposure. It's mostly the same patients who are at risk for skin cancer are the ones at higher risk for ocular complications from sun exposure. Those patients who are fair eyed, fairly complected, of Northern European or Western European descent. However, we recommend that all patients exercise caution with respect to sun exposure.
