Christmas Ornaments - Iridescent Design
Artist Mary Gallagher-Stout demonstrates how to make an iridescent design on a hand painted Christmas ornament.
Transcripts
Mary Gallagher-Stout: Hi! I am Mary Gallagher-Stout and today we are hand painting beautiful glass ornaments, right now I am going to show you the difference between using regular glass and iridescent glass in your bauble making. This is a tear drop shaped ornament, we are going to remove the lid and we are going to add some medium, some acrylic flow medium to get the paint swirling around in there and we are just going to shake it up to get good, full coverage and we are going to dump out the excess medium and there are some bubbles in there sometimes and that is okay because they will pop and it is not going to effect your finish product. It actually will bring more beauty to the finished piece because the paint will move in around the bubbles. So I am going to be using in this ornament vat orange and I am only going to use one color when I am using iridescent because the iridescent glass has a spectrum of color within it.
So you do not want to use too much because it will cancel out that beautiful iridescent quality. So I am just going to use one color and in this case, vat orange is the choice because love orange, orange is so pretty and you can see within the iridescent how I have really good coverage of this media because it is very translucent or transparent actually, so you are just going to swirl it around to get the coverage that you like. I do not think that full coverage really is necessary when you are using iridescent glass because I like to look through and see the transparency and the shapes that -- the negative spaces just make it all that more interesting, I think and I think this looks phenomenal. So I am going to dump out the excess in my bucket and put it in my drawing rack, let it dry it overnight and come back in the morning and pop the lid in and hang it on the tree with a beautiful ribbon and then it will be just phenomenal.
So that concludes our ornament making project today and I hope that you have a great time and a happy holiday.

Wonderful and creative! Extremely informative videos, however.... are you using a specific type of paint? (ie: for glass) Thank you.
