Celebrate Kwanzaa - The Karamu and the Community
Nia Egwin of the United Black Community discusses how to celebrate Kwanzaa including the Karamu and the community.
Transcripts
Nia Egwim: Jumbo! I am Nia and we are showing you how to celebrate Kwanzaa. In this segment, we'll be discussing what is done during Kwanzaa in the community. On each day during Kwanzaa in the community, programs should be held that focus on the principle for that day. The community program should begin with libation, followed by candle lighting; the same is in the home. The programs may involve invited speakers, dancing, drumming, presentations by different groups in the community done in a festive manner. The Karamu is the feast held at the end of Kwanzaa. The Karamu may be held on the night of December 31st or January 1st. The Karamu should be a festive occasion.
When possible, observe traditional African practices. For example, playing African music, dance, story-telling, and eating with hands.
Next, we'll be discussing how to apply the Nguzo Saba and Kwanzaa in to our everyday lives.
