Adding Product to Curly Hair

In this video, hairstylist Annie Hathorn explains how to style curly hair by diffusing with a blow dryer. Appropriate product usage and diffusing techniques are explained in detail throughout the segments. She also gives several options for finishing the hair, including touching up the curl with a curling iron and pinning the hair half up. These techniques can be used on individuals with all types of curly hair, and will even help people with straight hair achieve a wavy look, which is all the rage right now.

Annie Hathorn: Hi, my name is Annie Hathorn. I am a hair stylist at Tangerine Dream Beauty Bar. In this video we are showing how to style curly hair. In this segment, Ill be showing how to apply product to curly hair. The product I am using today on Kelly, I am using two different Redken products, one is a gel and one is more of a mousse, and combined they create a nice light airy curl. There are many, many curl products out there. A lot of them depend on what type of curl you have. Some people have very tight curl that needs to be calmed down, toned down. Some people have lazier curls that need to be encouraged. Kelly has that lazier curl pattern in there, so we are using products that more encourage curl, but as I said, there are many curl products out there for you to choose from.

Our product today, I am going to blend two products together in Kellys hair. I am using the gel called Elastic Works and a foam from Redken called Full Frame. So I am blending them together in my hands and then I am going to go in, starting more on her ends and work the product in. You have to use a lot of product on curly hair. A lot of people dont realize how much product curly hair can take, and how much is really needed to achieve the result that we are looking for a nice, controlled, pretty curl pattern. So I am scrunching the product in, again starting at the end, like we did with the conditioner and working my way up. Actually, I feel like I want a little bit more, so I am going to put a little more of each into my hand. I think, I need a little more because, like I said, curly hair often takes more product than what one would think, or what non-curly hair would take. So I just felt like I was running out of my product, so I put a little bit more in, scrunching it in, making sure we have nice, even distribution throughout the hair.

Okay, so now we have our product in the hair and in the next segment, we will be diffusing the hair to dry it and encourage the curl.
