David Swanson has been involved in model railroading for almost 40 years. He has been a key officer in many model railroad organizations including the Elmhurst Model Railroad Club(1974-1984), Great American Train Show(1985-2000), Great Midwest Train Show(1974-2006), Greenberg Train Shows(2003-2006), Great Train Expos(2004-2006) and the World's Greatst Hobby on Tour(2005-2009). He is currently executive director of the World's Greatest Hobby Program. He also owns and manages an advertising agency, Competitive Intelligence Advertising. He is a former middle manager for IBM. He has modeled for many years in N scale and specializes in passenger trains.

Dave Swanson: Hello! My name is Dave Swanson of The World's Greatest Hobby Program. And today we are hoping to get started in the hobby of model railroading by picking out the right train set. Model railroading is a fun family hobby. The hobby that has many unique aspects and teaches you a wide variety of skills, you can learn carpentry, you learn how to lay track, you learn electronics, you become an artist and create scenic, a views and vistas.

The hobby is really a wonderful thing to share with the entire family. You can get multiple generations of the family involved in it. We see many parents, grandparents and children, all sharing the hobby of model railroading.

In today's world, we have a lot of things that are virtual like computers, and the internet. But model railroading is real. You put your hands on something and build something of your own creation. And now, that we understand a little bit about the benefits of model railroading, I am going to spend some time in the next clip showing you all the various scales and sizes of model trains.
