Cornrows & Co. was founded in June of 1980 by Pamela Ferrell and Taalib-Din Uqdah. The enterprising husband and wife team started a business that quickly became the country's most well-known hair braiding and natural hair care salon. As the growing trend for healthy hair care evolved, the demand for no extension, chemical-free hair styles inspired Ferrell to create a natural product line and the contemporary twist, lock, and handroll styles that have become a cultural phenomenon.

Cornrows & Co.'s pioneer work has been featured in leading publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Forbes Magazine, Inc. Magazine, USA Today, Essence, Sister 2 Sister, the New York Times, and the Washington Post. Its owners have also appeared on BET, ABC's 20/20, WHMM TV, and WUSA TV in Washington D.C., as well as international television in West Africa, Great Britain, Germany, and Japan.

Cornrows & Co. continues its mission to redefine standards of beauty and education as they relate to African-American hair. In addition to a range of natural hair care salon services, Cornrows & Co.'s thriving mail order business offers books, videos, and its own natural hair and skincare product line.

Pamela Ferrell: Hi, I am Pamela Ferrell with Cornrows & Co. Natural Hair Care. I am going to show you how to do a twist style on natural hair. First, I am going to show you how to do section, comb out and blow dry wet natural hair.

This is after you do a shampoo. It doesn't matter how thick, how long the hair is. This is very important that you section the hair and you organize it, so that when you get ready to blow dry, you will have sections that will make the blow drying process a lot easier.

Now depending how long and how thick the hair is, that's going to determine the size of section. I always say, take a section that's about the size of the palm of your hand. Of course, obviously if the hair is much longer and much thicker, then you will use a smaller section. As you see, I am grabbing that section and I am combing ends first. You just, kind of, pluck through down to the root. Then once that section is combed out, what you will do? Part it into two and then you are just going to put it in a loose section. This is just a section, so that when we get ready to blow dry, we can easily untwist it and we can move through this hair style pretty quickly.

If you have a short twist and you find that it not stand together, then that's where your clamps will come in place. I will just use a butterfly clamp to hold it in place. Again, grab the section and you are going to comb the ends out first and gradually work yourself down to the scalp area. I want you to be able to comb it through completely from the scalp to the ends, divide it into two sections and loosely twist it.

It's important that it's a loose twist. Sometimes you are inclined to do a really tight twist because you really want those twist to hold and stay together, but these twists are not for hold, these twists are just for assisting you in the actual blow drying process. If your twist seems to pop loose, it's probably because you are twisting it to tight. If you have very long hair, you can take and tuck the ends of those twist ends. That will just, kind of, keep it out of the way.

So there you have it. We have sectioned, we have combed out and sectioned natural hair. In our next segment, what we are going to do is we are going to blow dry it. Again, the blow dry is going to be just as quick and as easy as the combing.
