Pamela Ferrell: Hi, I am Pam Ferrell with Cornrows & Co. Natural Hair Care. Today, I am showing you how to do a twist style on natural hair. We have just finished the flat twist and now in this segment, I am going to show you how to do individual twist. What I have done is I have sectioned out a very thin section on the hairline. The reason I did that is, these are going to be individual twists but they are going to have a little bit of direction. So that when we look at it from the front, it will have a nice little flow, like our flat twist. Again, the reason you do an individual twist is you want to have more flexibility and movement in the hair style. Whereas, a flat twist pretty much stays in place.

So you are going to grab a small section and of course, the section determines the size of twist. If you do a very, very fine section, then you will get a fine, really small twist. This section we are doing is what I call a medium twist. When I twist, I am going to hold it straight up, so that it's not twisted real tight to the scalp. I am purposely doing that because I want some lift and I want some volume. Again, a twist is two pieces and you are working with those same fingers. We are going to wind it around and twist to the very end.

As you see, that twist pretty much stands up and that's what I wanted to do. I wanted to have a little lift. With this, you are going to really have to use, again, it's all in the feeling. You don't need to use a comb, you don't need to use a clip, it's your fingers, that's your tool for this. You can feel the size of section, whether it's the same size. Sometimes, that takes a little bit of practice. So the more you do it, the better you will get at it. In fact, you don't need to do this in front of a mirror, you can just feel it and do it as you are sitting and may be reading a book or watching a movie.

Alright, so again, I am going to twist it to the very end and one piece over the other. It's going to have like a rope effect. There's different kinds of twist, you can do a tight twist or you can do a loose twist. This is a loose twist because we want it soft. A tight twist will have more of a really defined rope, kind of, feeling and that's a slightly different technique because you do a little rolling as you twist. I am going to slow this down a little. We get two pieces and we wind it around, grab it, wind it around, grab it.

Why do we do twist on natural hair? Because the texture, the kink the, the coil and the curl and the wonderful texture you have in natural hair, is what holds the twist together and also gives the hair the body. It gives the twist a little bit of puff and that's not going to happen if the hair is relaxed. If it's relaxed, it's straight and it's not going to look the same. Generally, it doesn't hold because you don't have the same kind of body that holds that twist together.

One of the things that you really want to pay attention to, in order to have a nice, neat, uniform twist, your two pieces have to be even. If one piece is smaller then the other, then your twist is going to be bumpy. So if you have a bumpy twist, take it a loose and make sure that your two pieces are perfectly even. So now we have finished our individual twist. In the next segment, I am going to show you how to finish the hairline, give it a nice flow.
