Transcripts
Malia Bailey: Hi, my name is Malia Bailey. We are going to go over the basic fundamentals of racquetball. We are going to teach you everything you need to know to get started in this wonderful action packed sport. We are going to talk about basic rules, basic strategies. We are going to go over serves, service returns, shots and shot selections and movements and how to move efficiently.
By the end of this video, you should be able to pick up your equipment, go to your club, jump on a racquetball court and be ready to play. These are some of the things that you are going to need in order to start playing racquetball. You will need a racquet, and your racquet can be up to 22 inches long. If you can find some nice gum rubber shoes, those are really good on racquetball courts. You will need a racquetball. They come in different colors. You might want to consider wearing comfortable clothing, so it gives you the ability to stretch and it is not very inhibiting.
Also I use a glove. It is not mandatory, some people really do not like them, but I do. It just gives me a better grip on my racquet. Also, you will need a pair of eye guards. Speaking of eye guards, safety is very important. The reason why we wear these eye guards is to protect our eyes from our opponents or ourselves. I have seen people get hit in the eye with the ball. This will protect them. I have seen them hit themselves also.
As far as the racquet is concerned, your racquet needs to have a tether. What this will do? It will go on your wrist and that will keep the racquet from flying out of your hand and going across the court, hitting your opponent. Another important point about safety would be, as you are playing, make sure you are aware of where the ball is and where your opponent is. That will help you, you will be safe as a player and help your opponent to be safe as well.
Before we get started, I just want to tell you a little bit about myself. I have been playing racquetball for more than 30 years. I have accrued 32 national titles, 5 world titles. I was the member of the US team for 15 years. I have the privilege of being a US team coach for 4 years. I have also played on the Pro Tour for five of those years. I have played throughout my two pregnancies and I also played and competed throughout my life with cancer.
So racquetball has been a big part of my life for a very long time and it is really near and dear to my heart. So lets get started.
