Mary is a Studio Artist and Instructor at the Workhouse Art Center in Lorton VA.  Ms. Gallagher-Stout is a highly sought after decorative consultant and professional artist. Mary has studied in France, Italy, and Mexico to supplement her formal education.  Ms. Gallagher Stout holds a BA in Philosophy and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Rosemont College in 1996.  She owns and operates a successful decorative painting company that services commercial facilites as well as private residences.  In 2008, she interned on HGTV's hit series Designed to Sell and in 2007 she was a Graduate Resident Artist of Virginia Commonweath University's Summer Studio Program.

Mary is currently focusing on her studio art and has been invited by esteemed curator and educator, Trudi Van Dyke, to be a part of an upcoming exhibit.  Ms. Gallagher Stout recently collaborated with award winning artist, Chelsea Owens, on her Wonder Womb Installation. Wonder Womb will be on exhibit at the Workhouse Art Center, Building W-16, for the entire month of March, 2009.

Blowing Out Easter Eggs - Making it Hollow

Mary Gallagher Stout: Hi! I am Mary Gallagher Stout. Today, we are decorating Easter eggs. Before we can start our decorating, we need to blow the egg out. So I am going to demonstrate how to blow out an Easter egg. You are going to need a safety pin or a sailing needle and something to blow the egg into. What you are going to do is you are going to poke a hole in the top of the egg. They are a lot more sturdy than you would think. I mean, they are certainly not baseball, so you don't want to put too much pressure on them.

The other thing that I found when blowing out eggs are, using a warmer egg is better because you want to try and break up the membrane in there, because its going to be coming through this tiny hole. So I poke the hole on the top and now I am going to poke a hole in the bottom. After you poke the hole in the egg, you are just going to want to swirl the pin around to break up the membrane because the more you can break that up, the easier it is to blow out.

So now we have a hole on the top and bottom. Now is the fun part of blowing out the egg. So where do you see this? Its a scene. So have your breath ready so much as if you are blowing out a balloon. You are just going to blow it up. You want to blow into the egg as if you were trying to blow up a really stiff tiny balloon. That's it. I am going to rinse it out. If you would like, you can put a little bit of white glue in there to make the inside even more secure, but that's how we blow out an egg.
