Ron Bowman: Hi! My name is Ron Bowman and today we are going to teach you some beginning running tips. We will talk about beginning running tips, how to get started, choosing the correct gear, preventing injuries, proper running technique, the mental aspect of running and nutrition for running. We will go over tools and equipment in much more detail later on the video. But the basic things that you need are a good pair of well fitting running shoes and some running shorts or tights appropriate for the conditions that you will be running in. You will also want to wear a light shirt according to the conditions of the day and that's really all the equipment that you need for running which is why running is one of the nicest of sports that you can get into because it doesn't cost very much to do. And the other thing that you want to consider also is the safety aspect. Before you start any running program, as with any exercise program you want to make sure you check with your doctor. Make sure you don't have any underlying risks that might be a problem a little bit later. Another thing to make sure that when you run, that you run in a well lit area if at all possible, and that if you are going to be away from general public things like that, you carry a cellphone, because if something does happen you get injured or something like that, that you can get assistance. I also think it's important that you know a little about me. I am a certified RCA, Road Runners Club of America Running Coach. A USAT Triathlon Coach and Race Director and an Ace personal fitness instructor. I have been a runner all my life, logged over 40,000 miles in the past 26 years. I have completed 80 marathons, 76 Ultramarathons which are longer than 26.
2 miles including some 100 mile runs, and also a 106 Triathlons including Hawaiian Ironman World Championships and the Lake Placid Ironman. To date I have trained over 500 first time marathoners and 200 beginning runners. So that's a lot of experience that I want to share with you and the certifications help do it in a technical and precise manner. So I am looking forward to this.
