Pirooz Sarshar: Hi! I am Pirooz Sarshar, Co-Founder of the Grooming Lounge. Today, I am teaching you about the basics of men's skin care. In this segment, I am going to teach you all about exfoliation. You are probably wondering what exfoliation is. To you and I, it's known as scrubbing or using a scrub.
Scrubs usually come in different grains. Some are very coursing grains, some contains sea salt, some have cornmeal, they varies from exfoliant to exfoliant. The job of a scrub and what a scrub achieves when you apply it on the face, it removes all the dead skin cells and it unclogs all your pores. By using a scrub and washing your face with a scrub, you are taking a same approach you would by using cleanser.
You are still going to apply it with water. You can also cocktail it with your cleanser but I do advise you to wash your face before you use the scrub. Because if you don't, what's going to happen is you are going to push all that dead skin back-in. By washing your face you are actually giving yourself a clean surface to use the scrub on.
Now it's very simple. I am going to turn on the water. Now the one thing to remember with the exfoliants and scrubs is that they can help prevent in-grown hairs. It's a great, great grooming tool to use before shaving because it really, really prepares the beard and it really gets rid of the dead skin cells all around. The other thing to remember with a scrub is when you are exfoliating, you don't want to go too hard. Remember to keep it away from your eyes because the skin around your eyes are very sensitive. So the scrub can actually do some damage. So here we go. As you could see right here, the scrub that I am using is a medium grain scrub. It contains some sea salt which is great for my skin and there is some cornmeal in here. You see, it's a different color. What I will do is I will rub my face with it.
It's a little different than cleansing because you need to go very lightly with scrub, you don't want to go too fast. As you see me doing this, you will notice all of the grains on my face. Well, I am going to take advantage of these grains. I am going to exfoliate and I am going to get rid of all the dead skin.
Now remember when you are washing your face, exfoliating your face or cleaning your face in any way, you want to work on all the details, specially around the nose because we tend to forget about these areas and around the neck. We do recommend exfoliating 2-3 times a week. This isn't something you want to do everyday and your skin can't handle it everyday.
Now watch as I go around my eyes, I am going very lightly because if I go too hard, like I said earlier the skin around here is very fine, very thin and very sensitive. As I am doing this, you will notice that when I am done, I am going to take advantage of the scrubber a little bit more, but I want you to look at my complexion when I am done with this. Again, blot the face and look at my complexion. I have a brighter complexion, I have a cleaner face. I have removed all the dead skin cells around my face. I am fresh, I am ready to go. I can tone next, I can moisturize next, I can shave. I can basically do whatever I want. But exfoliation is important, do it at least 2-3 times a week. In the next segment, I am going to teach you about toners.
