Hanging the Drywall

Eric Johnson: Hi! I am Eric with Johnson Drywall. Today, we are going to give you an introduction on how to install a drywall. The first step you want to do is measure how much drywall you will need. This wall, for instance, was a 113 inches long. So we measure a 113 on a drywall and marked it with a pencil. Then you come back with your utility knife and your T-square and you cut it out. You want to cut the drywall to that length. Then it snaps right off, once you have cut it.

Then once you have already cut it, you will go to back and glue your studs with a drywall adhesive. If you want to do with 3 foot of the stud, if its a 4 foot sheet of drywall, you want to glue about 3 foot of it. You do not want to do the end studs. Once you have got your measurement and cut your drywall and glue the studs, your next step will be bringing the top piece in, which you always want to hang the top piece first.

So you hang the top piece to the wall first and you nail up the parameter with nails and the field, you want to put screws in the middle. You can put two screws per stud, thats plenty. You always hang the top piece first. When you come to do your bottom piece, you want to make sure you have a jack to keep it up off the floor. You want to jack it up as tight as this is the other joint is possible. So you dont have a big gap here.

Then you nail around the parameter and screw in the middle and you are good to go. Now that you have finished the drywall, the next step will be hanging a metal corner bead which comes in 8 foot, 9 foot or 10 foot. If you have an 8 foot ceiling, you want to buy a box of 8 foot. You can get those at your local hardware stores, wherever you buy your drywall.

As we said our first step when we have a 8 foot ceiling and if you need to cut it for any reason, you want to use a pair of snips to cut it. You just cut it right down on either side of it, then it just falls and snaps right off. So now we are going to show you how to put the corner bead up. Here you go.

You want to make sure you slide it all the way to the top of the ceiling, you dont want to leave a gap. Slide it down, so you can show it. You dont want to leave a gap like that. You want the gap to be on the bottom, so that will be covered by trim. You will see you want to just slide it all the way to the top of the ceiling. Then you are ready to go. You want to nail it about every 12-16 inches. You want to do a nail on either side of it, the same side, its same spots on every 12 inches. You want to push when you are installing it, hold it in there tight. Once you have nailed it every 12 inches, your corner bead is good to go.
