How to Build a Website

In this video, professional web developer Kevin Frey, of TransEffect LLC, goes over the basics of creating a simple web page using a "What you see is what you get" editor (in this case, Adobe DreamWeaver). The video is tailored to beginners who have limited knowledge of the principles behind web site design and development. The segments cover everything from registering a domain name to getting started with HTML and CSS. Also covered are page templates, blogs, and some general tips for making your site better. There's even a segment dedicated to some of the terms you should be familiar with as a web designer/developer, as well as some advice on where to find more information, for anyone who wishes to master some more advanced techniques. Due to the fact that this is a video for beginners, it does not extensively cover some items that were considered better suited to people with a more advanced web design/development skillset, such as the difference between HTML and XHTML, designing the look and feel of a site in programs like Adobe Photshop or Fireworks, and why it's so important to separate presentation from content.

Transcripts

Kevin Frey: Hi! I'm Kevin Frey from Trans Effect LLC and today I'm going to be showing you how to create a basic website. In this video series we're going to be covering such topics as web design and development terms in order to get you more familiar with some of the lingo, domain names and host names that will get you set up with a hosting account in a domain name, the design and development process where we'll give you a quick overview of how to get started, creating a template that will tell you how to create a website template, inserting hyperlinks and giving you some information about why we need hyperlinks. Inserting images and changing the colors of your website; blogs and why a blog can sometimes be better than an independently hosted website; some general best practices and tips to keep you going, and some additional resources where you'll be able to learn much, much more than what I'm covering in this video.

The tools you'll need for today are computer, Internet access and a program for creating and editing HTML based websites. I'll be using Adobe's Dreamweaver, but if you don't have Dreamweaver, a simpler program is easy to find with a basic web search. Before we get started let me tell you a little bit about myself. I have a degree in Network Engineering but I've been doing web design and development for about 11 years. In 2005 I co-founded Trans Effect LLC, so that I could do web design and development full time. Since then we've worked on a variety of sites from course forms and environmental causes to bakeries and government agencies.

Okay, let's get started building your website.
