The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) was the first humane society to be established in North America and is, today, one of the largest in the world. Our organization was founded by Henry Bergh in 1866 on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans, and must be protected under the law. Headquartered in New York City, the ASPCA maintains a strong local presence, and with programs that extend our anti-cruelty mission across the country, we are recognized as a national animal welfare organization. We are a privately funded 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, and proud to boast more than 1 million supporters across the country.

Kat Miller: Hi! I am Dr. Kat Miller of the ASPCA. Today we are talking about cat behavior. Now I am going to talk about very basics of cat behavior. Did you know that cats retain a lot of the natural behaviors, that their wild counterpart show. So when you bring a new cat into your home, it's less about training the cat, than it is about adjusting your own environment, your own behavior, and a situation to match the cat's natural behaviors.
Kitten start out more active and playful, and generally mellow as they get older. Usually around two years of age you start to see a behavior change as they get older. Prevention is often the best medicine when it comes to behavior problems. Set up your environment for your cat in a way that makes it easy for them to succeed, reward the behaviors that you like to see, ignore the once that you don't, and have realistic expectations for your cat.
Coming up next, we'll be talking about litter box problems. How to prevent and solve them.
