Terry Dean: Hi! I am Terry Dean from Terry Deans Dance Studio. We are teaching you the waltz.

What we are going to be working on now is the swing and the sway of waltz. This gives the waltz added shape, so it's very simple to do, but it adds much more grace and poise to your dancing and it's very simple. So let's start off.

The first ballroom dance action we are going to do is body swing. Swing is kind of like, if you are riding on a swing, it basically has that look. If I am going forward on a swing, I go under. If I am going back on a swing, I go back. So, my hips comes forward, as if I was riding on a swing and then they go back, as if I am riding on swing. So, we go swing, swing and you will notice that Cindy, when I swing forward, she swings back, but not the head and when I swing back she swings forward. So, our head stays up and our bottom swings under. Here we go, swing, swing and this is going to add a lot of dimension to your basic waltz, which will give it a much finer look.

The next ballroom dance element is going to be sway. Sway goes from side-to-side, so as I go to my right side, my body will sway in the right direction and then will sway to the left. So, I am lifting my right ribcage to the right and then I am lifting my left ribcage to the left. As I go sideways I sway and I sway.

Now, I am going to do this with Cindy in dance position, so you can see the action. First, we are going to do the swing, I swing forward she swings back, she swings forward and I swing back goes, swing, swing, swing, swing. Now, we are going to do sway. Sway goes from side-to-side sway, sway, sway, sway very good. Now, we are going to take the swing and the sway and I am going to demonstrate it in the box step, however, first I want to demonstrate the box step without the swing and swag, so you can get an idea of the difference. If I just do the box step without the swing and the swag, it very level one, two, three, one, two, three and its kind of very flat. Now, if I add the swing and sway to it, we get swing, sway, swing sway, and it creates a rolling action, which makes the waltz beautiful. Thank you very much. So that was the swing and sway portion of the waltz. The next thing we are going to be doing is the waltz rise and fall.
