Until the early 1970s, consumers had no way to distinguish between incompetent and competent mechanics. In response to this need, the independent, non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was established in 1972.

ASE's mission is to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service through the testing and certification of repair and service professionals.

At present, about 400,000 professionals hold current certifications. They work in every segment of the automotive service industry: car and truck dealerships, independent garages, fleets, service stations, franchises, and more.

Tony Molla: Hi! I am Tony Molla, the Vice President of Communications for the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. On today's video, we are going to give you some valuable information on how to find a good repair shop. We will talk about what to look for in repair shop, what questions you should be asking. How the repair shops set their labor rates and other charges. What to do when you have a problem and what to do when you don't get that problem resolved. Now the tools you will need for finding a good repair shop are simplicity itself, an internet connection is helpful, a telephone is definitely useful, and a phone book. Using those devices, you can find yourself a good repair shop using the advise we are going to give you now. But before we get started, let me tell you a little bit about ASE. You have probably seen that big blue gear with the ASE letters on it in repair shops all around the country. ASE was founded in 1972 to improve the quality of automotive service and repair by the voluntary certification of automobile technicians. ASE develops industry standard tests that actually measure the knowledge, the technical knowledge of an automobile technician that assures that the individual working on your car is in fact qualified to do so. These are the folks you want working on your car and truck. In addition to my work at ASE, I am also an ASE certified technician. But when it comes to automotive service, like everybody else, I am a customer. Our cars and trucks are the second largest investment we make and you want to get the most out of that investment by maintaining them properly, and that requires finding a good repair shop. In our next segment, we will give you some valuable tips on how to do just that.
