Leigh Siegfried: Hi! I am Leigh Siegfried with Opportunity Barks Behavior & Training. Today we are talking about how to train your dog to walk politely on a leash and the now we are going to discuss motivation and management. Finding what motivates your dog is a really good place to start when you are looking to teach then to walk on a loose leash. Most times, they are food motivated and they generally work for food. The more high value your food is especially if you are training a behavior that your dog is learning for the first time or if you are working outside, it generally really pays to use something very valuable like little bits of cheese and little bits of meat. You can try hot dogs, precooked frozen meat balls, freeze dried liver or it's small bits of cheese. You don't need a ton of food to keep your dog motivated, just pea-size pieces. Now management refers to preventing your dog from rehearsing behaviors that you don't want them rehearsing. Generally, most people do not want their dog to pull on a leash and when you are first training, you want to set your dog up for success. So using a quiet environment or maybe starting to teach your dog some skills in their home is a great place to start and then you can take it into the real world. Next we are going to be talking about using the right kind of equipment that can help you manage and prevent your dog from pulling.
