Leigh Siegfried: Hi I am Leigh Siegfried, with Opportunity Barks Behavior & Training. Today we are talking about how to teach your dog to walk politely on a leash. And now we are going to be discussing is a anti-pulling technique called passive healing. With passive healing what you are doing and it's really really simple, all you are doing is you are walking with your walking with your dog on a leash. You are not pulling them, you are just simply changing directions frequently. You are walking in circles, you are making figure eight patterns. When your dog wants to pull one way, you are walking the opposite way. The more unpredictable you are, the better. What usually happens is your dog will start to go wow! What is this person doing, where are they going? And they start to watch you or sort of look at you or look up at you. When that happens and you notice that they are actually starting to follow where you are going. You start to reward that was small bits of food, praise or you can be either be using your clicker and feeding.
So clicking and treating or telling them good and then giving them a treat. And you are absolutely going to be treating the dog and praising the dog, when they are in the position that you want. Which means beside you are not pulling. They don't have to have their eyes glued on you, but all we are doing for starters here is teaching your dog to sort tune into you, when you are out on a leash. So know that we have worked a little bit with the passive healing technique. We are going to talk about another way to also train your dog to walk politely on a leash and that is teaching your dog to hand target, which we'll be working on next.
