Hi! I am Terry Dean from Terry Deans Dance Studio. We are working on the rumba. We are going to do the basic step in the rumba.

The basic in the rumba is a box step. The box step has the top of the box and the bottom of the box. The man would be doing the top of the box while the lady does the bottom and vice versa.

Let me first show the box step and we would do it side by side. So, we will start with the left foot. The top of the box is going to have a forward step, then the sidestep, and then together step. The bottom of the box does a back step on right, then a sidestep, and then together. So, it goes forward, side, together thats the top of the box, back, side, and together thats the bottom of the box.

Now each half of the box is going to have four beats of music. So, what we are going to is we are going to count slow, quick, quick. The slow represents two beats of music and each quick is one. So, it going go slow quick, quick, slow, quick, quick or one, two, three, four, one hold two, three, four, one hold two, three, four, but it is just easier to say slow quick, quick, so lets just do that one more time. Slow quick, quick, slow, quick, quick, good.

Now, I am going to dance this with Cindy, and again I am going to be the top of the box while she does the bottom slow, quick, quick, slow, quick, quick, slow, quick, quick, and slow, quick, quick. One of the important things about all dancing is basically they always rotate. So, we are going to take the basic box step and rotate. First, I will demonstrate by myself. Thats not going to rotate that much. We are only going to go from a corner to a wall, to corner to a wall.

So, if I am facing a wall it will go, slow, quick, quick. So now I am facing a corner, then slow, quick, quick. Now I am facing a wall, slow, quick, quick, corner, slow, quick, quick wall, slow, quick, quick corner, slow quick, quick wall, slow, quick, quick corner, and slow, quick, quick wall. So, it turns a little bit more gradually. Lets try that and slow, quick, quick corner, slow, quick, quick wall, corner, wall, corner, wall and right back to where we started. So, it is very important to get that motion and make sure that the lady is doing the natural opposite of what the man is doing. Thats the basic box step.

Next, we are going do the posture and the basis look for the rumba.
