Jim Connors: Hi! My name is Jim Connors, and I'm with Rheem Manufacturing Company. Today, I'm going to show you how to make an existing water heater more energy-efficient.

I'll show you how to turn down the thermostat on both the gas and electric water heater, drain the water heater to remove hard water deposits. Then I'll give you tips on what to do with your water heater while away on vacation, as well as other energy saving tips such as repairing leaky faucets and replacing old shower heads. Finally, I'll discuss how to replace your water heater.

Remember to always consult your product owner's manual and take proper safety precautions when working on or around your water heater. Also, consider consulting a professional plumber or contractor before taking on any project. Storage water heaters are designed to provide a ready supply of hot water. In order to do so, the gas burner turns on or the electric heating elements energize throughout the day, whether there is an immediate need for hot water or not.

Properly maintained, a water heater will reliably provide hot water for your home for years. Water heating can account for up to a third of a home's total energy usage; an old, inefficient or improperly maintained water heater can increase your energy bills.

Before we begin, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I've been in the water heating industry for about 18 years and I've worked for Rheem in many capacities. Rheem is one of the world's leading providers of water heating in HVAC equipment. Currently, I'm a National Account Manager for Rheem, but I've also been involved in product development of both tank-type and tankless water heaters.

So let's get started, and take a look at a few ways to improve the energy efficiency of your water heater.
