Jim Connors: Hi! I am Jim Connors with Rheem Manufacturing Company and today, I am talking about how to select the right water heating technology for your family. Now, I am going to discuss how to select a storage water heater. Before we begin, remember to consult your product owner's manual and take proper safety precautions when working on or around your water heater. Also consider consulting a plumbing professional or contractor during the selection process. If economy is your goal, you'll want to replace your existing water heater with the same fuel type and size that you have now. Storage water heaters are typically the least expensive water heaters to buy and install and can provide years of trouble-free service. Water heaters have changed a lot in the last several years. So, look for the blue Energy Star label to select the right water heater for you and the most energy-efficient model.
Follow these three easy steps to select the right storage water heater for your needs. First, identify the fuel your water heater uses. Electric models are easy to identify by the two panels on the front of the water heater. Gas models will have a gas valve at the bottom and you will see a large vent on the top. Second, determine how many gallons of hot water you need. If your family has been running out of hot water, consider a larger gallon capacity model and the one you are replacing. The typical 40 to 50 gallon water heater found in many homes may not be enough for today's garden tubs, multi-head showers or families with teenagers. You may want to consider a larger model of 60 or 75 gallon.
Third, check the dimensions of your new water heater. If you select a larger size replacement water heater, make sure it will fit in the area you plan to install it. Check the carton for water heater dimensions and the diameter of the exhaust fan on your gas water heater. The overall cost of a water heater is based on the model you choose, its gallon capacity and the length of the warranty which typically ranges from 6 to 12 years. That was the basis of selecting a storage water heater. Next, I will discuss how to select a tankless water heater.
