Hi, I am Captain Steve Chaconas with National Bass Guide Service. Today, we are going to show you how to grip a rod because before you could cast one, you need to know how to hold on to it. Now, take a look at the rod with a spinning reel, the spinning reel hangs below the rod and has a rod and reel support, this is a rod seat, this is he reel arm support. You are going to grip the rod by either putting your fingers one, two or three fingers forward of this reel support, whatever feels comfortable, for a left-handed person it will be on this side, for a right-handed person it will be on this side, but you basically want to be in this position, so that you can have like a little fork from there.

So, that you have a little pivot point of the reel, this will enable you to cast also enable you to reel. This is way a right-handed person would do it, a left-handed person would also do it but they would just reverse it to the side of the reel, thats how you grip the rod when you are getting ready for basic casting, you can also use your other hand on the back of the rod to allow it some stability to assist in the cast, but this is a basic grip, learn how to do this first, find something that feels comfortable. Coming up next preparing to cast.
