    Great!
I am coaching my son's preliminary hockey team and I was once a dedicated figure-skater. I realize that teaching hockey beginners is a lot different than can-skate (canadian beginner skating instruction). I just want to be able to teach these kids the basics of skating as imple as possible. I find that this is the only website that I have come across that has been extremely helpful. I am not the head coach, I am a helper and I find that I would love to incorporate these drills but I don't want t

Hi, I am Geremi Weiss, Im an International gold medalist in figure skating for the US. Were going to learn today basic hockey drills, its called a hockey stop. When you learn how to skate, you need to know how to stop, its something very important so you dont crash into the wall. So, Raya (ph) here today is going to show us a basic hockey stop, she can do it on her right and her left. When were practicing these, this is one of the drills where you can practice skating to the wall and splaying the wall, we will show you that as well. Raya is going to do a hockey stop for me on her right foot. Good, and the other side; bend your knees and turn your feet, lets do that again. Bend and push, good, one foot is on the outside edge, one foot is on the inside edge as you stop. Two more; bend your knees and twist, last one, bend your knees and twist the hips, very good. That is how you stop with a hockey stop. Raya is going to do one more to the wall and splay the wall for me. So, she is gaining speed, the faster she goes, the more splay she will have, excellent. Thats your basic hockey stop. The drill were doing today is how to stop backwards and do the backward stop. Were going to be doing it on two feet as well as just the right foot and just the left foot. When youre doing this in a lesson, you will probably practice this for about two minutes. So, Raya here today is going to show us a backward stop with two feet. Now she is going to show us a backward stop with her right foot and her left foot. Good, and again, backward this way two feet stopping, slide on the inside edges and do the right foot for me, only push right foot and turn the right foot out, and then she is only going to push left and turn the left foot out. Do that again, the one foot it stops for me, because I want you to notice her feet, she only turns out the right, her left foot stays forward. Then she only turns out the left and her right foot stays forward. One more, very nice, using only her inside edge to stop, good, and last one. She is staying low and into the knees, nice bend positions. That is three ways to stop backwards; two footed backward stop, right foot, and then left foot.
