Hi, I am Geremi Weiss; Im an International gold medalist for the US in figure skating. Today were learning basic hockey drills. This drill that were going to be doing today usually is a warm up drill, its called alternating crossovers. Youre usually going to do it on a straight line, not in a circle or not on the curve. So, Raya (ph) here today is going to do alternating forward crossovers for us. She is pushing with her right, crossing right, stepping left, pushing left, crossing left, stepping left. She is going to do that again for me. Its on a zigzag pattern, she moves to the right, she crosses to the left, and again, crossing right, left crossover, right crossover, one more time. This is going to help her gain speed, the longer the ice surface, the faster she can go. Those are called forward crossovers in an alternating patterns, normally its done on the long side of the ice rink. Raya here today is going to show us one called backward alternating crossovers. Again, youre going to use this one in a warm up and its done in a straight line with a zigzag pattern, you will not do this on the corners of the rink, only on the long end of the rink. So, Raya is going to start with us on backward alternating crossovers. She is going to cross her right foot, step left, cross left, step right, cross right, step left, and around she goes into the straight line. Crossing and stepping, crossing and stepping. Good, two more times for me. Arms are out, she is on crossover and step crossover, crossover and step, crossover and step, excellent. Keep your chest lifted and sink down in your knees, lower your center of gravity to the ice. Good, those are backward alternating crossover, you can do them slow and you can speed them up. Again, this is a warm up drill, its one way of going backwards in hockey.
