Missy Henriksen: Hi! I am Missy Henriksen, Vice President of Public Affairs for the National Pest Management Association. Today I am discussing how to prevent bed bugs and more, why bed bugs are so difficult to treat once an infestation occurs.

First it is important to acknowledge that bed bugs should not be acquitted with filth or sanitation problems in hotels or in homes. Bed bugs can infest in the most beautiful hotels and homes, just as easily as they can infest any other place. All bed bugs need is a blood-meal to survive. Therefore if there are people present, bed bugs can be present as well.

Bed bugs are very illusive, transient, and nocturnal pests, and due to their transient nature these pests can move quickly, spread quickly, and overwhelm your home very quickly. These pests can live for a year or more without feeding and can withstand a wide range of temperatures from nearly freezing to almost 113F. This is why both cold and heat treatments are becoming more popular options for controlling bed bugs within the pest management industry.

Because of its resilience and its ability to survive without a blood-meal, this is not a pest that can be controlled with do at yourself measures. Its illusiveness works to its advantage as bed bugs can be present that go undetected by the untrained eye. If you think you may have a bed bug infestation contact a licensed pest control professional for an immediate inspection. It is their high level of expertise and training which can help you to identify a potential bed bug infestation and more importantly treat it in an efficient and effective manner.

Vigilance is the key. By utilizing the tips regarding travel and inspection you can insure that you are taking all of the necessary steps to prevent bed bugs from taking up residence in your home.
