What to Expect During Your First Massage
Kristen Sykora of the American Massage Therapy Association tells you what to expect from your first massage.
Transcripts
Kristen Sykora: Hi! I am Kristen Sykora, massage therapist and member of the AMTA. Today I am here to help you get the most out of your next massage. Right now, I am going to discuss with you what to expect on your first visit. Your massage therapist will do everything possible to ensure that your experience is positive and rewarding. You may be asked, what are your reasons for getting a massage? Current physical condition, medical history, lifestyle, stress level, areas of pain and other pertinent topics. You will be asked to undress in private and drape yourself with a sheet, towel or gown provided by the therapist. You may leave your undergarments off or on at your discretion. You lie down on a comfortably padded massage table. The therapist will undrape only the part of your body being massaged, ensuring that your modesty is respected at all times. You should expect a peaceful and comfortable environment for your massage. Report distraction of any kind to your therapist, whether from physical discomfort, room temperature, volume of music or any other source. Now that we have discussed, what to expect on your first visit? Let's discuss a variety of massage techniques.
