Greg Baumann: Hi! I am Greg Baumann, Senior Scientist for The National Pest Management Association. Today I am discussing termite prevention. Now, I will discuss what you should consider when hiring a professional, especially facing a termite infestation. Although it's often the first sign of termites that makes you pick up the phone in search of professional assistance, you shouldn't wait until there is a major infestation. Professional pest management can, and should be used as part of preventing termites. However, if you do find your home being threatened by termites, you must act quickly to hire a pest professional who can meet two requirements. First, you need a pest professional who can effectively and efficiently treat the termite problem. Second, you need a pest professional who you can trust. Remember, a termite infestation can pose a serious threat to the structural stability of your home, not only threatening your property, but also the safety of your family. Selecting a pest professional to stem the tide of potential termite damage is not only prudent, but also key to maintaining your peace of mind as a homeowner. Here are just a few important tips to help you select a pest professional. Evaluate qualified and licensed pest management firms that are members of the national, state, or local pest management associations. Ask friends and neighbors to recommend pest control companies they have used successfully, and how satisfied they were with the service. Word of mouth references are likely honest evaluations and ones you can believe. If a sizable amount of money is involved, you should be encouraged to pursue bids from several pest management companies. Don't rush a decision. You are paying for professional knowledge. Hire a firm whose judgment can be trusted. Before signing a contract, be sure to fully understand the household pest, the extent of the infestation, the work necessary to solve the problem as well. If a guarantee is given, know what it covers, how long it lasts, what you must do to keep it in force. Buy value, not price. Choosing a pest professional is a health and safety decision. The value of the service should outweigh all other factors. If you employ these tips and are willing to do just a bit of homework, you will be able to secure the services of an outstanding, trustworthy pest professional, that will not only solve your pest problem, but will also work closely with you to prevent infestation from occurring in your home. That's a quick overview of termite prevention. For more information on termites, or to find a local pest professional, visit pestworld.
