Dr. Neil King: Hi! I am Dr. Neil King, founder of King Chiropractic. We're talking today about how to shovel snow?

We're going to go over a couple of tips that are going to make this work for you, and make sure you don't have any problems at the end and actually a very effective way to shovel.

So let's start first by saying, why not you stretch first? Don't jump right out of bed, go outside, jump off the sofa, go outside, do some gentle stretches, maybe warm up your back by pulling one knee at a time to your chest, warming up your shoulder, kind of going backwards with your shoulders or maybe even stretching over head to stretch out your shoulders and warm up your upper back as well.

The next is make sure you have a good shovel. Get a nice solid shovel that has openings on the side, so if you happen to push the snow, the snow can work its way out. You can't believe how many people I have seen who have gotten injured, because there shovel was bent or broken or something like that. So please make sure you have a good shovel.

Put on shoes with traction on the bottom. So many people get hurt, because what they are doing is they are out there, they are shoveling snow, they slip and they fall. So let's put some shoes on that have some traction on the bottom. I think it will make a huge difference.

Work on maintaining your posture. By good posture, I mean use the muscles in your legs. You also want to keep your head up, that relaxes your back and try to make sure that your back stay straight or even a little bit of an arch to the back, so you're not rounded over creating pressure across your low back.

Clean around your mailbox. Make sure the walkways are clean. You probably even going to have to clean something out for your pets to go outside, so make sure you think of them. Work towards the area you want to work to, because that means as you get more tired, you'll have less and less snow, so start away and move in. If you come in, you have any problems, put some ice on your back, because that will help with inflammation in muscles and also drink some water.

During the winter, I am telling you, we get dehydrated and we don't even know it. So take frequent breaks and drink water, because hydration makes all the difference. Then make sure you sit back, relax, and enjoy the beautiful work you have done. Thank you and good luck!
