Kajal Mehta: Hi! My name is Kajal Mehta, Managing Director of Dhoonya Dance. Through this series, Bollywood Dance Basics, you are going to learn steps to the second part of the chorus for the song "Desi Girl".
[Music Playing 00:00:18 - 00:00:35]We'll begin this segment with a jump touch from front to back. Let's start by reviewing it side-to-side. So jump over, touch, jump over touch; jump, touch, jump, touch. In order to do that front and back, it's the same concept. Taking one foot taking one foot jumping forward, touching back with the other foot, then taking that same foot back, touch.
So the foot that's touching with the toe is the one that you are going to use next. We jump, touch, jump, touch. We are going to do this four times, front, back, front, back. Now in the song he is asking a question, who is the hottest girl in the world? So we are going to take our hands out like we are asking and sing to the audience. Who's the hottest girl in the world? Just to add a little bit of pizzazz to that step, let's slightly shake our shoulders in a shimmy as we do it. So taking it front and back in five, six, seven, eight you have front and back, front and back. As you are shaking those shoulders, try to isolate so that you are moving this and not your lower body.
Next, we are going to do shift steps taking it right, left, right, left. Make sure that your knees are bent and loose, and push from side-to-side lifting those legs. Right, left, right, left, right, left, right, left. As you do that, take your arms up the side of your body. One, two, three, four. Fingers should be loose but together. And to add some grace, your pointer finger can be slightly separated. So taking that up, one, two, three, four. Make sure that you feel like you are rocking side-to-side as you do that.
Next, we are going to scoot to one side hand on the hip, the other hand behind your head. Scoot in the direction of the hand that's on your hip. So bending the knees and scooting, pushing over to the side on to the toes. So you have down, up, up. Let's try that again. Five, six, seven, down, up, up. So after that we are going to roll our hands. Take it from here, one, two and roll two, three, four.
To add to this roll, you are going to do a limp step or a pick-up step, because you are picking up your foot on the beat, bending the other leg. So sit into that back leg. Sit one, two, three, four, lift and bend. One, two, three, four. As you do that, you'll roll one, two, three, four. Now, this part is pretty fast. So let's practice slow. One, two, three, four, a little faster, two, three, four and one and two. Make sure, you are sitting into the back leg slightly leaned back. One, two, three, four; roll one, two, three, four.
This whole segment, let's do it without the music first. We are going to ask the question, who is the hottest girl, jumping front and back. Five, six, seven, eight, one, two, three, four, step two, three, four. Scoot one, two roll, three, four and step two, three, four. And now, we'll put the choreography for the verse and the chorus to the song "Desi Girl" with the music.
