Mitch Baker: Hi! I am Mitch Baker with American Plant and we are talking about May gardening tips. Now that the weather is getting warmer and our lawns are filling in, we are starting to see some warm weather lawn problems as well. So lets make sure we are keeping our mowers set to its highest setting. We want to cut that turf at three or three-and-a-half inches in height; that will help reduce stress from summer heat and dry conditions. It will also reduce the number of weeds we are seeing in the lawn. Right now we are starting to see some clover, some dandelion, some wild violet. So we can go ahead and control those by hand. I am using an old fashioned dandelion weeder or dandelion digger, that works well for any of these weeds when they are few in number. But if you have got a great number of them over a large area, that may not be practical, so you may have to go to something like a spray weed control. Here we are using an organic weed control, its a spot treatment, its going to kill anything that you spray it on, so try to keep the spray focused on just the weed. Now, any sort of over spray, if it kills any of the grass, after seven to ten days, the weed is dead, you can come back in, rake that area away, and then you can go ahead and get some grass seed down. You dont have to wait any longer, you can fill those areas in with grass seed. I had put down a little bit of organic matter on top of that grass seed, just to hold it in place, keep the moisture around the seed; that will help with germination, but it's not too late to do that, to get those areas to fill in, so that you dont have weeds that fill in those areas. And as far as watering, make sure you are watering that seed daily, lightly, and then as we go into the hot summer months, make sure you are watering that lawn as needed. And its better to water deeply and infrequently rather than a little bit of water applied everyday. So water deeply to get the roots down deep, but water only when needed. So I hope these May gardening tips help you get your lawn, garden, and ornamental pond off to a great start for the upcoming summer season.
