Cat Agility Training - Weave Poles
Jill Archibald, cat agility trainer from the Cat Fanciers’ Association, talks about teaching your cat to weave poles in the agility course.
Transcripts
Jill Archibald: Hi! My name is Jill Archibald. I'm Cat Fanciers' Association, Feline Agility Coordinator. Today, I'm going to show you the basics of feline agility training. Now, I'm going to show you how to do the weave poles as part of your agility training.
The weave poles are kind of difficult to do. When you get there, the cat is going very fast. You need to slow them down, so they can focus. Drag the lure on a floor and slowly go in and out of the pole, and do get the cat to continue so reach one. Drag the toy to the floor, across the pole. Make sure she goes through the poles on the floor. Again, drag it on the floor, if she gets distracted, bring it back in, and bring it back it. Can't play around, got to go straight, that's a good girl. If you don't have weave poles at home, you can choose just about any thing that's stable. Get the cat focused, drag them back, and they can go through and back and swirl. They can even be a water bottle, there you go. Let's come back. Come on back. Good girl. Come back. Yeah.
Some of the best handlers say, be sure to stay ahead of your cat. Make sure the lure is very enticing that they want to chase it. Practice placement of the lure. Make sure it's just a head of the cat, above the obstacle you want them to go over. As they start moving, move it forward and down.
You need to know what you're going to do before you're doing. Very important, that you're ahead of a cat with the toy and what you're going to do. It's the timed event. The stopwatch starts at the stairs and ends at the last hoop. You have four minutes and 30 seconds to complete the course. You cannot touch the cat during the completion. Remember, your cat is in it for the fun and you should be too. Good luck with your cat agility training.
