Transcripts
Jim Davis: Hi! I am Chef Jim Davis for Harris Teeter. I am going to show you all the ways to cut a potato. How to cut Hash Brown Potatoes - First we peel it, take off all the outside peel, using a good sharp peeler, it always works better, remove the peel and then because it has some dirt on it from the outside peel, just simply rinse it off a little bit and dry it with a paper towel. Now, we are going to cut our slice off of a bottom of our potato about an eighth of an inch thick. I am going to stand it up, I am going to take the slice off the side the same way. I am going to take these slices about an eighth of an inch thick, about like this and then I am going to lay them down and I am going to cut them into strips, about an eighth of an inch apart. Now, I am going to turn that potato, I am going to slice it into small dice, and that's how you dice a potato for Hash Browns.
How to cut French Fry Potatoes - And we cut off about a quarter-of-an-inch of the bottom of the potato, we are going to get work with the flat surface, so we peel off a little bit of the side, and we cut it into quarter inch slices, just like that. Then laying down one at a time; cut it into quarter inch lengths and again, that's how you cut a French Fry. How to slice a potato - We simply decide how think we want our slices, and using our fingers nails as a guide, our knuckles as a guide, keeping our finger nails turned under, we slice the potato, in this case, about a quarter-of-an-inch thick and that's how you slice a potato. How to chunk a potato - Cut it first in half length wise, and then in half again into quarters and then simply chunk it into pieces about a half inch thick, and that is how you chunk a potato.
