Hi! I am Susan Harris and I am talking about Sustainable Gardening. In this clip, I am going to cover how to plant a plant in your garden. Now, to plant this small shrub I have dug a hole that's approximately two to three times the width that it is in the pot and about the same depth that it is in the pot. So, I have done that and now I am ready to take the plant out of the pot. Now, it's important to make sure that it's not rootbound. So, this is a little bit rootbound; it has roots surrounding the ball here. So, I will take a stick knife and I loosen the roots even cut through a little bit and you see on the bottom they are all tight there, so I loosen them, so that they will be on their way to the surrounding soil. So, I get that well-loosened then I am ready to put it in the hole. Make sure the level of the soil around the plant is about the same level of the surrounding ground and then stand back and make sure this is really where you want to plant that plant and even make sure that it's facing the right way because every plant has a front and a back. Now, I am ready to fill in the hole and here is that soil that came from the hole. I have just removed the rocks from it and then I have added about 50-50 this compost kind of product. It's a high quality soil improver. So, I have mixed that in here approximately 50-50. So, then I fill the hole, tamp it down and put mulch all around it and it's ready to be watered. For watering I use -- this is a soaker setting on this. You could also not use a nozzle, just the full force of the water and so I -- make sure that the planting hole gets two or three gallons of water and then I wait, let it sink in and do that one more time and new plants like this should be watered again in 24 hours, again in 48 hours and then weekly throughout the gardening season.
