Mary Alexander: Hi! I am Mary Alexander from Home Instead Senior Care and today I am talking about how to help your parents manage their medications, care.

com reports that a recent study found that more than 80% of adults age 57 and older, take at least one prescription drug a day and that about half of them regularly mix drugs with over-the-counter medications and supplements.

They go on to note that one in 25 older adults may experience a major drug interaction. Modern medicine has and continues to give us new drugs to ease our pain, cure our ills and extend our lives. Advances seem to happen everyday and as a result, we see new ads on TV, in newspapers and online, to having the benefits of some new drug.

This is all terrific, but as our parents' age, and the number of their potential health issues increase, it may mean their doctors prescribe them more and more medicines, plus with the holistic health movement, many seniors are using non-medical supplements to improve their overall health.

Because of the volume of medicines and supplements they maybe taking, may seniors find that they have problems keeping their medication regiment straight. They may take too much, too little, take it at the wrong time of day or not at all. What all this means for us, the family caregiver, is that we have to extra diligent about helping our senior loved ones, manage their medications.

In this video series, we'll discuss senior medication challenges and then give you tips on how to help your senior loved one organized and manage their medication.
