Nick Marine: Hello! Nick Marine with Marine Plumbing. Today, we are going to show you how to replace an old tub-and-shower valve. Right now we are going to start by showing you how to replace the shower head, arm, and trim.

First step is going to be removing the actual shower head. You are going to use a pair of mini-channel locks to remove the shower head in a counterclockwise motion. You are going to use the same mini-channel locks to remove the shower arm in a counterclockwise motion. Okay, I have just removed the shower arm and I am noticing that all the pipe dope that they use is hardened and dry rotted, it's where it can leak in the valve. The best thing to do is, even though it looks fine, you need to open it up and inspect and reapply Teflon or pipe dope to make sure you don't have a leak in the valve for this vary reason.

Next step is you want to take the shower arm and apply a Teflon tape. Apply a heavy duty Teflon tape and if it's a very thin Teflon tape, you want to wrap around at least four times. I have a commercial tape so I go around two times.

I am going to put on the shower a trim. Turn the entire thing hand threaded first into valve in a clockwise motion, righty-tighty, right is tight. Continue turning until you get it to almost where it won't turn anymore. Then what you want to do is take a pair of channel locks to get into the end of the actual shower arm and use that as leverage to turn it one more full rotation.

In this case, our home owner has a handheld spray so we are going to put in a diverted T to add a diverted handheld spray. And then we are going to go ahead and apply pipe over Teflon to that and then add the shower head as well in the same motion with channel locks.

We push in, the water comes through this hose, down up the hose into this handheld spray. I am going to push it up, the water comes through here. You are going to get more volume in this head. Now, we'll replace the old shower head, arm and trim and we've got the new shower head, arm, and trim installed.

We want to turn off the water of the home so we can install the new -- remove the old face plate, the old handle and the old tub spout.
